IT 380 - Film and Literature

Course Description
The course is taught in English. The aim of this course is to study and compare specific trends in literature and in film making. Fellini, Antonioni, Visconti, Bellocchio, Bergman, will be studied together with Pirandello, Sartre, Camus, Joyce, Mann, and Lampedusa.

The existential and the decadent hero will be the focus of the course. Both of these topics are rooted in the aesthetics of the late 1800’s and on the philosophical and theoretical attitudes of the 20th century. We will view the films and read the books while keeping in mind the broader cultural background and the language(s) in which they were written.

Students will take a mid-term and a final examination, in addition to several class presentations.
